Bariatric Surgery Weight Loss Calculator

Based on the bariatric procedure you choose, you can expect different levels of weight loss. This calculator gives you an idea of what to expect at 1, 2 and 5 years, using your sex, height, starting weight and procedure.

These estimates are the averages we see across published studies. Your weight loss will be different. Renew Bariatrics makes no guarantees or warranties about results.

Faded procedures are outside Renew’s BMI range for that option. Revision estimates use your weight at the time of the revision. This isn’t a medical assessment, and our surgeons make the final recommendation.

How it works

How to use our bariatric weight loss calculator

Our calculator is based on large studies and meta-analyses of weight loss for each procedure. Instructions are as follows:

Step 1

Choose your sex. For the most reliable results, choose the sex you were born with, not the one you currently identify with.

Step 2

Indicate your current height.

Step 3

Share your current weight.

Step 4

Choose 1, 2 or 5 years, and find the procedure you wish to undergo. Hover over or tap an amount to see the studies behind it.

Ideal body weight (IBW) represents the weight a person should be for their height. Excess weight is the amount a person is over their IBW. The calculator shows both next to your BMI.

Let’s suppose you are a woman, you are 5′7″ and 230 lb, and you are going to have gastric bypass. Your ideal body weight is about 136 lb, so you would need to lose about 94 lb to reach it. One year after gastric bypass, people lose about 31% of their body weight on average in studies. For you, that’s about 70 lb, which leaves you about 24 lb from your ideal body weight. You will likely not have reached your ideal body weight in that time.

Why use it

Purpose of the bariatric weight loss calculator

Our calculator helps patients understand the weight loss they can expect if they follow their post-surgery plans. It gives estimates based on your sex, height, weight and the procedure. Our calculator aims to give you:

Estimated weight loss

An estimate of how much weight you could lose after your procedure.

Procedure comparison

Because every procedure is shown, you can see which one will likely lead to the most weight loss.

Motivation

When patients see what’s possible, they are more likely to start the journey, and to keep that goal in mind when things get tough.

Education

A better understanding of what to expect from your specific procedure.

These estimates are averages from published studies, not a promise of your results. Our surgeons review your health history and make the final recommendation.

Choosing a procedure

Which bariatric surgery is best?

Bariatric surgery is the surgical treatment of obesity, aimed at weight loss. It is the most effective option for people who haven’t reached a satisfactory weight with non-surgical methods. The procedures Renew offers include the gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, mini gastric bypass and SADI-S, along with the non-surgical ESG and gastric balloon.

The question of which bariatric surgery is best may not have a simple answer. Each has its pros and cons, but all of them are effective for weight loss and for improving weight-related conditions. The first step is to meet a doctor and determine if you are a candidate. The eligibility criteria at Renew include:

  • A BMI of 29.5 or more for surgery, or 25.5 or more for the gastric balloon
  • Physical problems from excess weight that affect your day-to-day activities
  • Other non-surgical treatments that haven’t worked

After confirming that you are eligible, the next step is to choose a procedure with your surgeon. Your BMI, body fat and health conditions may favor one procedure over another. Your goal, whether it is reducing the risk of heart disease or reaching a specific weight, can also affect the choice. Here are some questions to consider:

  • Are you seeking a reversible procedure?
  • Is your BMI significantly high?
  • What is your weight loss goal?
  • Do you have any conditions that might make you a high-risk patient for a specific procedure?

Consider your unique needs

The best bariatric surgery depends on the needs and goals of each patient. It may mean prioritizing the most weight loss, the lowest rate of complications, or the most affordable option.

If you are looking for an option that doesn’t permanently change your digestive tract, the gastric balloon is temporary and is removed within a year. ESG is done through the mouth, with no incisions.

For a BMI of 40 or more and the goal of the most weight loss possible, SADI-S may be the most suitable option. It limits how much the stomach holds and reduces how many nutrients the intestine absorbs, so patients take higher-dose supplements for life.

For people with heartburn from acid reflux (GERD), gastric bypass may be the best option. Studies have shown that Roux-en-Y gastric bypass improves reflux symptoms, and its weight loss is substantial.

Our guide to choosing the right surgery

For us, the ideal bariatric surgery requires minimal change to the digestive tract, satisfactory weight loss, few complications, a low mortality rate, improvement of weight-related conditions, an affordable price and a low failure rate. The gastric sleeve offers almost all of these benefits. Part of the stomach is removed to limit food intake, the intestine is left undisturbed, and the complication rate is low.

In conclusion, the most suitable bariatric surgery for you is a decision best made with your doctor, after a full evaluation of your health and your goals.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the weight loss calculator?

It shows the average weight loss in published studies for each procedure. Your results will be different and depend on your starting weight, health and how closely you follow your post-surgery plan.

How much weight will I lose after a gastric sleeve?

In studies, people lose about 25% to 30% of their body weight 1 year after a gastric sleeve, and about 19% to 27% at 5 years.

Which procedure leads to the most weight loss?

Among the procedures Renew offers, SADI-S leads to the most weight loss in studies, about 42% of body weight at 1 year. The mini gastric bypass is next, at about 37%.

Will I reach my ideal body weight?

Many people don’t reach their ideal body weight, and that’s normal. Losing part of your excess weight can still improve conditions like type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.

Why does the calculator ask for my sex?

Ideal body weight is calculated differently for men and women, so your sex changes your excess weight. It doesn’t change the percentage estimates for each procedure.

What BMI do I need for weight loss surgery at Renew?

Renew offers surgery from a BMI of 29.5, and the gastric balloon from 25.5. The upper limit depends on the procedure. Use our BMI calculator to see your options.
