How it works

Gastric bypass explained

Diagram of a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass showing the small gastric pouch, the bypassed stomach and duodenum, and the jejunum
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
  1. 1A small pouch. Your surgeon divides the stomach into a small upper pouch and a larger lower section. The pouch is about the size of a walnut and holds about an ounce, so you feel full on much less food.
  2. 2A new route for food. The small intestine is connected to the pouch, so food bypasses most of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum) and goes straight to the jejunum. You absorb fewer calories and nutrients.
  3. 3Nothing is removed. The bypassed stomach stays in place and keeps making digestive juices, which rejoin the food farther down the intestine.
  4. 4Small incisions. Most gastric bypasses, including ours, are done laparoscopically through several small incisions. The hospital stay is typically 1 to 2 days (Mayo Clinic).

What to expect

Benefits and trade-offs

Gastric bypass is one of the most effective weight loss surgeries and can help with acid reflux (GERD). It is also more involved than the gastric sleeve, and it needs lifelong vitamins and follow-up.

~70%Of excess weight may be lost within two years, depending on your habits.Mayo Clinic
50.7%Median excess weight lost 10 years after gastric bypass in the SLEEVEPASS randomized trial, vs 43.5% after sleeve.SLEEVEPASS 10-year trial, JAMA Surgery, 2022
1–2 daysTypical hospital stay, though it may be longer.Mayo Clinic
For lifeA multivitamin with iron, calcium and vitamin B12, plus regular checkups.Mayo Clinic

Gastric bypass or gastric sleeve? Bypass changes both how much you eat and how much you absorb. The sleeve removes part of the stomach and does not reroute the intestine. In the 10-year SLEEVEPASS trial, reflux-related esophagitis was found in 7% of bypass patients vs 31% of sleeve patients. Our surgeons will recommend one based on your BMI, reflux and health history. Am I a candidate?

Who qualifies for gastric bypass

The 2022 ASMBS and IFSO guidelines recommend bariatric surgery for a BMI of 35 or more, with or without other health problems, and say it should be considered for a BMI of 30 to 34.9 with a metabolic condition such as type 2 diabetes. BMI is only one factor, though.

BMI of 35 or more

Recommended regardless of obesity-related conditions.

BMI of 30 to 34.9

Considered when you have a metabolic condition, such as type 2 diabetes.

BMI over 65

Surgery abroad is usually not advised. Our team can discuss other options.

Other methods tried

Diet, exercise and medication haven’t given you the results you need.

Good general health

You are healthy enough for surgery and anesthesia.

Ready for lifelong changes

Long-term success depends on your diet, activity, vitamins and follow-up.

Every patient is screened by a team including a physician, dietitian, psychologist and surgeon, who weigh whether the benefits outweigh the risks for you.

How long is the hospital stay?

The hospital stay after gastric bypass is typically 1 to 2 days. Your Renew package includes 2 hospital nights in a private room and 1 hotel night.
