How it works

What is endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty?

ESG is a minimally invasive weight loss procedure. Instead of removing part of the stomach, as in a gastric sleeve, the doctor uses stitches to make the stomach smaller and tube-shaped, so you feel full sooner and eat less (Mayo Clinic).

  1. 1Through the mouth. A flexible tube with a camera and a suturing device (an endoscope) is passed down your throat into the stomach. There are no cuts on the outside of your body.
  2. 2Stitches, not staples. Stitches are placed inside the stomach to fold it into a smaller, tube-shaped sleeve. Nothing is removed.
  3. 3General anesthesia. You are asleep for the procedure, which takes about 1 to 2.5 hours.
  4. 4A quick recovery. Pain and nausea may last several days, and most people feel better after a few days.

ESG vs gastric sleeve

Both make the stomach smaller. The gastric sleeve is surgery that removes most of the stomach, and ESG reshapes the stomach from the inside without removing any of it.

ESG or gastric sleeve? ESG is less invasive, and no part of the stomach is removed. If you have a higher BMI or want more weight loss, ask about the gastric sleeve. Dr. Pérez will recommend an option based on your BMI, health history and goals.
