Reasons, risks and alternatives
A gastric bypass can be reversed, but it is rarely done. Reversal reconnects your pouch to the rest of your stomach so food takes its original path again. It is a major operation, usually saved for serious problems that other treatments haven’t fixed.
Renew does not perform gastric bypass reversal. For weight regain after bypass, we offer TORe and a GLP-1 program.

What it is
Why it’s done
Reversal is considered when serious problems continue after medical treatment, and often after revision surgery too (Plath et al., Obesity Surgery, 2025).
Rapid emptying that causes severe dumping syndrome, or blood sugar drops after meals (postprandial hypoglycemia), when diet and medication don’t help.
Trouble absorbing protein, vitamins and minerals, even with supplements.
Losing more weight than is healthy.
Marginal ulcers that won’t heal, or abdominal pain that persists.
Risks and recovery
Reversal is a complex operation, and research shows a high complication rate.
Will the weight come back? Usually, some of it. Weight regain was the most common event after reversal (28.8%) in a review of 100 patients, which also reported severe reflux (10.2%) and ongoing pain (6.8%). In the 2025 study, average BMI rose 18% within a year, from 23.9 to 28.2.
Alternatives
If the outlet from your pouch has stretched, TORe tightens it through the mouth, with no incisions. About TORe.
A weekly injection that reduces appetite, on its own or alongside a procedure. Our GLP-1 program.
Dumping, low blood sugar and vitamin problems are usually treated first with diet changes, medication and supplements.
Send your records and our team will tell you which option, if any, fits you. How we assess your bypass.
Renew does not perform gastric bypass reversal or surgical bypass revision. If you need one, talk with your original surgeon or a revisional bariatric center.
Send your bypass history and our team will tell you whether TORe or our GLP-1 program could help. Virtual consultations are available.

No. Revision changes your bypass to restore or improve results, for example by tightening the outlet with TORe. Reversal undoes the bypass and reconnects your stomach.
