Is removal right for you?
The most common reason. You have lost much less than expected, or regained the weight.
The band slips, or the stomach slips through it. You may vomit, have trouble swallowing or feel heartburn.
The pouch above the band stretches. Weight loss stalls and reflux can get worse.
The band wears into the stomach wall, with pain, a lost feeling of fullness or bleeding.
Stomach acid backs up into the esophagus, causing heartburn, nausea and vomiting.
The band or port becomes infected, with pain, redness and swelling where the band is adjusted.
Need help now? If you have severe abdominal pain, can’t keep liquids down, or are vomiting blood, get emergency care near you right away. Don’t wait for a surgery date.
What removal involves
Our surgeons review when and where your band was placed, how it was placed and your symptoms now. Your coordinator tells you which records they need.
Removal is usually laparoscopic. The surgeon removes the band, tube and port, and repairs the stomach if it has been damaged.
Similar to other laparoscopic surgery: incision soreness and gas discomfort in the first days, eased with pain medication.
Your stomach returns to its original size and your appetite comes back. Plan with your surgeon how you will manage your weight.
Do I need another weight-loss surgery after removal? No. Removal can be done on its own. Whether you do anything more is your decision, made with your surgeon’s advice. If you want to discuss converting to another procedure, see Lap-Band revision.
What the research says
Removal resolves band complications, but studies show weight often returns once the band is out. Knowing this helps you plan your next steps with your surgeon, whatever you decide.

“Loved the service, Dr. Green was amazing! Everything I had pain with was dealt with within that second. Huge thank you to the nurse Alejandro, truly outstanding. He was there every second I needed him and he’s very gentle.”
“Everything from beginning to end went great. From pre op to post op constantly checking in with pain/nausea, giving meds. Could not have asked for a better Dr, staff or environment.”
“Everything moved along very fast and before I knew it I was out of surgery. Gas pains were very painful but all of the nurses were very helpful and nice. A better experience than any American hospital that I have ever been to.”
“I was extremely nervous. But I was quickly put at ease. The staff is so kind and friendly. The nurses and physicians are compassionate. I was impressed with the cleanliness of the hospital. My surgery went well and I was walking around after recovery.”

Our surgeons review your band history and symptoms, then remove the band, tube and port, usually laparoscopically. If your stomach has been damaged, it is repaired during the same operation.

It is possible. Without the band, your appetite returns, and studies show many patients regain weight after removal alone. Plan with your surgeon how you will manage your weight.
