How it works

What is a gastric balloon?

A gastric balloon, or intragastric balloon, is a temporary, non-surgical weight loss treatment. The balloon takes up space in your stomach and slows how fast it empties, so you feel full sooner and eat less (FDA).

  1. 1Through the mouth. Under sedation, the deflated balloon is passed down your throat into your stomach with an endoscope. There are no incisions.
  2. 2Filled with saline. Once it’s in place, the balloon is filled with saline (salt water).
  3. 3Temporary. The balloon is removed by endoscopy after about 6 months for Orbera, or up to 12 months for Spatz.
  4. 4Part of a program. The balloon works with a diet and activity plan. Our nutritionists support you while it’s in.

Am I a candidate?

Who a gastric balloon is for

In the US, Orbera is approved for adults with a BMI of 30 to 40. Spatz3 is approved for a BMI of 35 to 40, or 30 to 34.9 with an obesity-related condition. Both are for people who haven’t been able to lose weight, or keep it off, with a supervised program (FDA).

BMI of 30 to 40

The range the FDA trials studied.

Other methods tried

Diet, exercise or medication haven’t given you lasting results.

Ready for a diet program

You’re ready to follow a diet and activity plan while the balloon is in and after.

No previous stomach surgery

A balloon usually isn’t an option if part of your stomach has been removed.

Some conditions rule it out

Such as active ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease, bleeding disorders, chronic liver disease and pregnancy.

BMI over 40

A balloon can be a first step before surgery. Ask Dr. Pérez whether it fits your plan.

BMI alone doesn’t decide. Dr. Pérez reviews your full health history first. Calculate your BMI.

Your treatment

From placement to removal

  1. 1Health review. Send your health history, and Dr. Pérez’s team confirms whether a balloon is right for you and which one.
  2. 2Placement day. An endoscopy checks your stomach, then the balloon is placed and filled under sedation. It usually takes less than 30 minutes, and you spend the night at the hotel.
  3. 3The first week. Nausea, vomiting and cramping are common in the first days and are treated with medication. You start on liquids, then move to semi-solid and solid foods.
  4. 4While the balloon is in. You follow your diet and activity plan, with support from our nutritionists.
  5. 5Removal. After about 6 months for Orbera, or up to 12 months for Spatz, the balloon is removed by endoscopy, either at Renew for $2,599 or by a doctor at home.
  6. 6After removal. The habits you build with the balloon are what keep the weight off. Ask us about next steps if you want more weight loss.
