Getting back to normal

Activity, work and wound care

  1. 1Walk early and often. Being active soon after surgery helps you recover more quickly. If something hurts, stop doing it.
  2. 2Go easy on lifting. Until your doctor clears you, don’t lift more than 10 to 15 pounds or push and pull heavy things. Don’t drive while you take narcotic pain medicine (MedlinePlus).
  3. 3Plan your time off work. Most people take 2 to 4 weeks off. Jobs with heavy lifting take longer, so ask your surgeon. Your package includes FMLA and return-to-work forms.
  4. 4Care for your incisions. Keep them clean and dry and wear loose clothing. Don’t soak in a bath, pool or hot tub until your doctor says it’s OK. Hold a pillow over your belly when you cough or sneeze. Your care team will tell you if any stitches need to be removed.
  5. 5Take your medications as prescribed. Let your doctor decide when to stop a medication. Don’t add medications your doctor hasn’t approved.
  6. 6Plan for pregnancy. Have a birth control plan, and avoid pregnancy for 12 to 18 months after surgery (ASMBS).
