Leading Gastric Sleeve Specialist in Cancun

Gastric sleeve surgery is an effective and popular Cancun weight loss surgery option that we perform at our hospitals located in Cancun, which can help patients achieve significant weight loss.

Gastric sleeve surgery reduces the size of the stomach to approximately 15% of its original size.  The remaining stomach is shaped like a small banana know as a “sleeve”. This procedure works in several ways: reduced stomach size, hormonal changes, and restriction. By combining these effects, patients can lose a significant amount of weight.

A study in Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases reported that patients experienced significant improvements in their quality of life, including better physical function, self-esteem, and mental health after gastric sleeve surgery.

Medical Tourism for Gastric Sleeve

Many patients put off important surgical procedures due to the high cost of medical care. For Canadian patients, the long wait times for the Canadian healthcare system consequently create a roadblock for patients. For these reasons, medical tourism is an option for patients who want affordable and safe medical care.

The cost of sleeve surgery at using our services is minimal, especially when comparing to the cost at home for self-pay surgery, not to mention hefty insurance co-pays. Renew Bariatrics provides care without compromise by highly skilled doctors and healthcare professionals who care for the patient’s wellbeing.

Can Gastric Sleeve Be Reversed?

During a sleeve gastrectomy procedure, the surgeon removes a large part of the stomach to create the small sleeve-shaped stomach. Since the body permanently removes the stomach, it is not possible to reverse the procedure. Since the gastric sleeve is not reversible, other options that exist are:

  • Revision to another bariatric procedure: Converting a gastric bypass or duodenal switch surgery is possible. These procedures can help with acid reflux or more aggressive weight loss.
  • Nutritional support: If you’ve reached your goal weight, our nutritionist can help you transition to a maintenance diet plan.
  • Medical management: side effects like stomach narrowing or severe acid reflux, medical treatment can help.

Types of Gastric Sleeve Surgery:

There are a few way to conduct the sleeve procedure, although our knowledgeable surgeons perform the procedure laparoscopically to achieve optimal recovery results. Other options types are:

  • Laparoscopic: Several small incisions are made in the abdominal wall. CO2 gas is used to inflate the area and provide room for the surgeons to perform the surgery. Carries a short recovery time. This is the method Renew Bariatric uses.
  • Single Incision: This option, Single Incision Laparoscopic Sleeve (SILS), consists of a single incision at the navel along with a small drain hole. This has become a popular choice for those that qualify (BMI under 35) for a super minimally invasive approach. SILS has the shortest recovery time and lowest risk option, if you qualify.
  • Open Surgery: Large incision across the abdomen, several inches long. Typically only used for complicated cases with surgical adhesions. The stomach is exposed for easy access to perform the surgery. Long recovery time and risk for infection.
  • Robotic: Small incisions similar to laparoscopic gastric sleeve. Short recovery time.

Gastric Sleeve Complications:

At Renew Bariatrics, our complication rate is very low due to our expertise and high level of quality control. In general, the surgery complication rate is less than 1%, but there are risks associated with the sleeve gastrectomy procedure:

  • Blood clots
  • Staple line leaks
  • Internal bleeding
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Acid reflux (GERD)
  •  Infection
  • Hernia

Gastric Sleeve Side Effects

Like any surgical procedure the surgery has potential for side effects, most of which are short-term or temporary during the first few days of recovery:

  • Nausea and vomiting, typically due to anesthesia reactions or overeating
  • Pain and discomfort around the incision sites
  • Laparoscopic gas pains
  • Constipation, due to initial limited intake
  • Dehydration, as a result of lack of fluid intake

Gastric Sleeve Pre-Op Diet

The pre-operative diet is critical in preparing for the surgery. The pre-op diet is designed to shrink the size of the liver and reduce the risk of surgical complications. The durations and items in your diet will be specified by your surgeon.

Here is an example of a pre-op diet, please follow your surgeons specific requirements as diets may vary:

  • High Protein i.e. Lean Meats, Tofu, Beans
  • Protein Shakes, 20g protein or more each
  • Unlimited vegetables (except corn, peas, potatoes)
  • No carbohydrates
  • No sugars
  • Healthy fats, limited to 1 or 2 servings
  • Sugar-Free Jello
  • Sugar-Free Juices
  • Water – 64 oz or more
  • Broth

In addition to following a pre-operative diet, it is important to eliminate:

  • Nicotine, typically 30 days before and after
  • Alcohol, typically 7 days before and months after
  • Caffeine, typically 7 days before and months after
  • Blood thinners
  • NSAIDs, typically 7 days before and indefinitely after
  • Other medications specified by your care team

It is also important to prepare for the surgery by getting proper rest, managing stress, and following any other pre-operative instructions you have been given.

  • Do not take any medicine unless prescribed by your doctor

Gastric Sleeve Post-Op Diet Keys to Success

Following the post-op diet after gastric sleeve surgery is imperative for proper healing and setting yourself up for your weight-loss journey.

Drink plenty of fluids.

It is important you drink at least 64 oz of fluids a day, such as water, sugar-free drinks, and decaf tea. Hydration is a must after surgery.

Phases

Your surgeon will specify diet phases and durations of each phase. These phases gradually reintroduce different types of foods to the patient's diet. This allows the stomach to heal and helps the patient adapt to new dietary habits.

Protein Intake

After the surgery, getting adequate protein will be key in recovery. This will allow muscle to be preserved during rapid weight-loss and ensure your diet is balanced. Protein is also more satiating and will enable you to feel full with less calories.

Avoid processed foods

Avoid processed and high-fat foods such as chips, fast food, and candy. These foods tend to be high in calories and can contribute to regaining weight.

Avoid carbonated drinks and alcohol

Both carbonated drinks and alcohol irritate the stomach lining. Alcohol is also an empty calorie. While not easy, it is suggested patients permanently eliminate these both long-term.

Daily Vitamins & Supplements

Vitamins and supplements are an important part of recovery. Many believe that vitamins are required after gastric sleeve due to malabsorption, but the procedure does not create malabsorption. Rather, vitamins are needed for the first three months of recovery due to the small amount of food intake in these first months. After this timeframe, a balanced diet is suggested to maintain proper nutrients. Vitamins that may be required by your surgeon or nutritionist, chewables, liquid or sublingual is suggested:
  • Multivitamins
  • Calcium
  • B12
  • Iron

Alternative Options of the Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

There are a few alternatives to gastric sleeve surgery. One option is to try pharmaceutical weight loss, such as Qsymia or Belviq. These pills help you lose weight by suppressing your appetite and increasing your metabolism.

You could also try dieting and exercise to lose weight. Other options include weight loss injections, personal coaching, and counseling.

Most of these alternatives, when stopped, cause weight regain, which is why bariatric surgery is typically a sustainable alternative after you have tried all other possible options to lose weight.

Can the Gastric Sleeve Be Stretched?

Gastric sleeve is considered a permanent procedure. Gastric distension is the stretching that can occur if care is not taken with the new stomach. Factors that can lead to gastric distention, if repeated frequently:
  • Overeating, follow portions specified by your surgeon or nutritionist
  • Drinking a large quantity of liquid at one time
  • Carbonated beverages
Following your post-op diet guidelines can prevent stretching of the gastric sleeve:
  • Eat small meals
  • Avoid carbonated beverages
  • Paying attention to fullness cues
  • Multivitamins
  • Calcium
  • B12
  • Iron
